Empath Feature

Being an empath is both a beautiful and complex thing. It is both a gift and a curse.

Having the ability and desire to experience and meet the emotional needs of others is great in that you can help those around you. Everyone deserves to be helped and helping others is a win for everyone.

However, being able to experience someone else’s world emotionally can mean that an empath doesn’t know where their own emotions start and end and can lead to difficulty distinguishing their own emotions from the emotions of those around them.

For empaths living this reality on a regular basis, this can be extremely draining and eventually lead to overwhelm, stress, and anxiety.

Empaths are prone to burn-out and can reach their tipping point very easily when they don’t take extra measures to set boundaries and practice self-care.

Read on for five tips that will help you set boundaries, avoid burnout and protect your energy as an empath.

Empaths, Use These 5 Tips to Protect Your Energy:

1. Mind Who You Spend Your Time With

Spending time with others, even those we love, is exhausting. It takes a lot of energy to be fully present physically, mentally and emotionally for those around us.

In addition to this, as empaths, we have an ability to attract those who “need help” all the time. People who are always looking for someone to talk to, someone who can help them. People who look for you when it is convenient for them but don’t reciprocate the relationship for you.

These people are toxic and have the ability to send an empath into an emotional tornado.

var googletag = googletag || {};
googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || [];
(function() {
var gads = document.createElement(‘script’);
gads.async = true;
gads.type = ‘text/javascript’;
var useSSL = ‘https:’ == document.location.protocol;
gads.src = (useSSL ? ‘https:’ : ‘http:’) +
‘//www.googletagservices.com/tag/js/gpt.js’;
var node = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0];
node.parentNode.insertBefore(gads, node);
})();

googletag.cmd.push(function() {
googletag.defineSlot(‘/268437716/In-article_Box1_336x280’, [336, 280], ‘div-gpt-ad-1451354753139-0’).addService(googletag.pubads());
googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest();
googletag.enableServices();
});

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1451354753139-0’); });

Evaluate who you are spending your time with. Are they draining your energy or lifting you up? Do they make you happy? Do they understand you and your empathic abilities? Are they understanding and supportive of the fact that you need to delegate your time wisely?

Spending time with other people will always be exhausting for an empath. That said, some people are worth a little bit of exhaustion. Choose wisely.

2. Switch Your Weekends and Weekdays

In a typical week, you probably go to work during the day and relax at night, reserving your weekends for time spent with friends and family. While this might be a good setup, it also means that you are always on the go, never having a full day to spend for yourself.

You are already “on” during the week. If you have a 9-5 job, you are already “out and about” and your energy levels are likely on high. In this state, you are in a much better position to go out with a friend.

Spending time with people during the week will also likely be a shorter time spent, reserving some energy, since you’re probably not going to stay out until midnight on a work night.

3. Find Your Ultimate Self-Care Routine

As an empath, having a self-care routine is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Taking the time to fill your emotional cup will ensure that you can be your best self for yourself and others.

A self-care routine will get you into a habit of making time to do things that ground and replenish your energy. This is key for empaths!

4. Establish a Support System

One of the best things you can do as an empath is find your support team and teach them how to best support you.

googletag.pubads().enableSingleRequest();
googletag.enableServices();
});

googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display(‘div-gpt-ad-1558824811816-0’); });

It can be really difficult to talk to your family and friends about being an empath. A fear of being labelled or judged keeps many empaths from coming forth with their true self.

But talking to your friends and family about being an empath will help them understand your emotions and recognize your behavior patterns so you have a sense of being supported and understood.

5. Say NO

If the answer is not a hard “YES!” then it is a no. Say NO to the things that don’t make you happy, the things you don’t want to do, and the things you can’t afford to do – either financially, physically, mentally, or emotionally.

Doing things we don’t like to do is exhausting. To top it all off, the things we don’t want to do are usually the things that we or other people think we should do, so then we feel guilty about not wanting to do the things we “should” be doing.

Break this cycle. “No” is a complete sentence and you don’t owe anyone an explanation for anything you don’t want to do.
