Tonsillitis is one of the common infection among the children. The symptoms of tonsillitis are fever, sore throat and also the swollen tonsils.

Tonsillitis is caused due to viruses and bacteria. The Streptococcal bacteria is responsible for a strep throat, which can cause serious problems if not treated properly.

Tonsils are the first defense line of the human. They produce white blood cells which fight the infection. Tonsils prevent viruses and bacteria to enter in the human body through the mouth.

A bacterial infection such as common cold or a viral infection such as strep throat is responsible for tonsillitis. Approximately 15% to 20% infection of tonsils are due to Streptococcal bacteria.

  • Scratchy voice.
  • Painful swallowing.
  • Stiff neck.
  • Tonsils turn red and swollen.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Congestion or a runny nose.

Recurrent tonsillitis:

Very often the tonsils are infected during a year or acute tonsillitis. Recurrent tonsillitis can be defined as follows:

  1. More than 7 times during one year period.
  2. More than 5 times a year during two years period.
  3. More than three times a year in three years.

Chronic tonsillitis:

They last longer than acute tonsils and also some other symptoms can arise which are – Halitosis, Chronic sore throat and swelling lymph nodes in the neck.

Generally, there is no need to visit a doctor in the case of tonsillitis but if you experience that a) Fever is more than 103˚F and not improving, b) Weakness of muscles, c) stiffness in the neck and d) a sore throat that is not improving within two days.

Generally, if tonsillitis caused by the virus such as cold, need not get so much of attention as it can cure within two to three days. If the tonsillitis is severe then you must contact your physician to take some antibiotics. Chronic tonsillitis sometimes needs surgery which is known as tonsillectomy.

Antibiotics are prescribed by the doctor when the condition of tonsillitis is critical and you have to complete the course of the antibiotics.

To remove the tonsils is known as tonsillectomy, however, it is recommended for those who have chronic tonsillitis only. Surgery is prescribed when the tonsillitis is not cured by treatment.

Home remedies:

  • Drink water and other liquids as much as possible.
  • Take enough rest as this can make you weak.
  • Add salt to a cup of warm water and gargle with it.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • You can use throat sprays and lozenges, these can help you to moist your throat. Some sprays have some anesthetic properties which can relieve pain.
  • You can drink warm tea with honey which will ease your throat pain.


Tonsillitis is very common disease and can be treated easily.
