During this treatment, a patient lies on the table and the doctor uses X-ray or ultrasound to locate the stones in the kidney. Then the doctor uses high energy shock waves from outside. These waves go through the skin and break the kidney stones into smaller pieces.

The doctor puts a tube in the ureter of the patient which is called stent. Stent help to flow urine from the kidneys to the bladder. The smaller pieces of stones will pass through the stent. This process will take an hour to complete.

Ureteroscopy:

Uterescopy is used to remove stones from kidneys and ureters. A doctor uses a flexible thin scope which passes through bladder and ureters and moves into the kidneys. No cuts are required in this process. If the stones are larger in size, then the doctor uses a laser through the scope to break the stones. A stent is used afterward to drain the urine from the kidneys to the bladder.

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy:

If the kidney stones are large enough or lithotripsy does not break stones as required, then this type of surgery is required. PCNL uses a small tube to reach the stones and they are break by the high-frequency sound waves. The patient gives anesthesia locally or fulls to sleep quietly.

The surgeon will cut a small portion to make a hole in the back or side of the patient and place a thin scope through that hole. This surgery can be done in two ways:

Nephrolithotomy

Nephrolithotripsy

the surgeon uses laser or sound waves to break the stones and vacuums up the pieces of the stones with the help of a suction machine. A stent is used to help pass the urine from the kidneys to the bladder. This process may take 20 to 45 minutes.
